Testimonials

Dear Neal, just a quick note to thank you for the outstanding job you did on my drums! My Yamaha Maple Absolute kit sings like angels!!! The 18" kick has much more low end , depth and projection than ever before and every single drum has a new, fresh resonance. As for the 1964 Sonor piccolo snare, I can't wait for us to be done with it, so that I can add it to my performance arsenal. Because of its history, it holds a very special place in my heart and it will be a great source of inspiration and joy to me, once I start playing it again and taking it out of retirement after 25 years in the storage room. Thanks again Bro, you did a fantastic job, un abrazo!!

I took my 1970's Ludwig set to Neal at Edge Tone Bearing Edges in January. The idea was to refresh what was there not make a radical change. I use this set specifically for the Big Band I perform with so I was seeking that "old school" Ludwig sound. Neal listened to my concerns and what I was looking to accomplish and delivered the goods. After the good Doctor had his way with the shells I took them home and put 'em back together in time for the annual Big Band Jazz Festival. Like a flower blossom. Of course the drums retained their classic sound but they sounded bigger, rounder and fuller. They had just blossomed out. And they were way easy to tune. The snare drum in this set is actually a 1969 model and was not part of the rest of the set. The work that Neal did on this drum is especially good. It sounds so much better, fuller (yes I know, I keep using that word) brighter. Neal's work excellent. He is very meticulous and detailed with his approach to the edges. I am very happy with the work he has done for me so far. I plan on sending him the rest of my snare drums. I highly recommend Edge Tone Bearing Edges. If you want your drums to be all they can be get them to Neal. He will make it happen. Thanks Neal and remember, Drums Good... Make Happy!!

Neal reworked the edges of a vintage Ludwig kit that I was planning on taking on the road on my gig with Jeff Bridges. These drums had been played consistently since they were bought by a good friend of mine new in 64 and by the time I acquired them, they definitely needed help. The kick drum in particular had been played with one head, and the front edges were severely damaged. Neal had to rebuild the front of the drum before he could even edge it. Neal honored the original vintage roundover of the drum edges, but managed to find an edge formula that let the drums cut through more than they had. I have found that Ludwig drums generally sound great in one tuning, the round tone for which they are famous. But Neal's edges allowed me to put a slight pitch bend into the tuning, which in turn made the drums sound REALLY good in a concert sound system. Our front of house engineer noticed the difference immediately, and on the last tour, I received as many compliments for my sound as for my playing. I am happy when people like what I do, but I owe my sound with this kit to Neal's good work. He listens both to the drum and to what the drummer wants to get out of his instrument, and in my case found the sweet spot. I recommend his work to any drummer who wants his drums to reach their full potential.

Neal: Just a note of thanks for the excellent job on my two snare drums. The old Gretsch has never sounded better. I spent part of the weekend in the garage fine tuning both sets. For as old as they are, they both sound great. Thanks for your craftmanship. Or should I say "Excellent Tradesman"-ship?

Neal: Finally got my 10-year-old Tama Rockstar kit reassembled and tuned up (with an assist from Barry J. Birmingham!) and I'm thrilled. You performed magic. Now it sounds like I've got a top line DW set. So excited to take them to King Bee's gig at the Creekside tomorrow night. Gonna wear two layers of Depends in case it's too much to bear.
